Sensica Sensilight Pro IPL Review – Is It Worth The $399?

Hair removal is a niche area of the beauty and personal care scene, with a wide range of products and electrical devices dedicated to home use. These range from affordable shavers, epilators, waxing kits to laser and IPL machines.

The latter is popular for two primary reasons: when used as instructed it can deliver long-lasting results with very little regrowth and on the whole, is virtually painless.

The Sensica sensilight pro IPL hair removal device claims to do both effectively. With a higher price tag than most of our typical personal care products, it’s a big investment for your beauty routine, but still a fraction of the cost of in-office laser treatments.

If you’re planning on taking up at-home hair removal, continue reading this Sensica Sensilight Pro IPL review to find out if it’s the right machine for you.

Who is Sensica?

Sensica is a medical aesthetics specialist that creates professional and innovative devices dedicated to personal use. Its technologies involve hair removal, wrinkle reduction, skin lighting, exfoliation, and cellulite reduction.

How does IPL Hair Removal Technology Work?

Intense Pulsed Light or IPL uses pulsing light energy to precisely target and remove hair follicles. With a handheld device like Sensica Sensilight Pro, you target multiple wavelengths of light at your hair follicles to damage the root and help break the cycle of regrowth.

With consistent use, hair grows back less frequently with less hair growth each time. Eventually, they will be permanently removed. Although results vary for each user, IPL brands often suggest that it can take around one year to yield permanent hair removal.

Does IPL Work on Darker Skin Tones?

Typically, IPL hair removal devices don’t work for deeper complexions. While it works by targeting darker pigment (hair follicles), it’s difficult for the device to pick up a contrast between the hair and the skin should your hair color be similar to your skin tone. This can cause incorrect heat transfer and skin burn.

If you’re wondering if Sensica Sensilight Pro works for your complexion, Sensica uses the Fitzpatrick skin chart to determine if you’re safe to use the machine. According to the brand, Sensilight Pro will work on all skin tones except for type VI (the deepest complexion).

For your peace of mind, Sensica Sensilight Pro features a built-in skin tone sensor. Say your skin is too dark for the treatment, the smart safety feature automatically disables the device so you can’t use it.

What is Included in the Sensica Sensilight Pro?

The Sensica Sensilight Pro comes with the handheld IPL device, an external power supply for you to charge the device, a precise treatment window (suitable for use on the face), and a large treatment window (suitable for use on larger surface area, including legs and arms).

Sensica Sensilight PRO Features

Being cleared by the FDA, Sensica Sensilight Pro promises to deliver permanently smooth and silky skin both on your face and body.

This device utilizes IPL technology with cutting edge reactive pulsed light (RPL) technology. According to the brand, RPL takes IPL technology one step further with unique sensors that constantly react to your skin’s specific needs with every single flash, ensuring a safe, fast, and effective hair removal treatment.

Sensilight Pro also promises to deliver salon-grade results, requiring just 15 minutes to treat lower legs. There’s also a one-of-a-kind energy recommendation setting, which automatically advises the best level for your skin tone, taking the guesswork out of picking and choosing the right one.

Although it takes about 3-4 treatments before you start noticing results, Sensica says that as you progress through the treatment, hair will naturally and eventually fall out. The time required of this process tends to vary from one person to another.

Always Do a Preliminary Test First!

I strongly advise you to do a preliminary test before going in with the Sensilight Pro for a large treatment area to determine your skin’s reaction to the device and to pick the best energy level. Perform the preliminary test on each area of treatment 48 hours before the first full use.

I can’t stress the importance of preliminary testing enough. The last thing you want to experience is a severe reaction, which could result in a trip to the doctor and unbearable pain, irritation, swelling, and discomfort. If you want to get all these potential problems out of the way, perform a preliminary test for safety and peace of mind.

When preliminary test, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Use the energy recommendation button to detect the optimal energy level for each area you intended to treat. Make sure you’re fully comfortable with this energy level before continuing.

Step 2 – Otherwise, begin from the lowest energy level. Deliver a pulse on the selected area and continue like this for a few seconds, gradually increasing one energy level at a time for as long as it feels comfortable.

Step 3 – Should you find a particular energy level uncomfortable or experience adverse effects such as severe redness or blistering, stop the test immediately.

Step 4 – Wait 48 hours to examine the areas. If your skin appears normal or if there’s a mild response (mild redness), you’re safe to proceed with a complete treatment at the highest comfortable energy level tested. Say there’s an adverse reaction, even on the lowest energy settings, avoid using the device.

Prep Your Skin

To prepare your skin for any IPL hair removal device, remove all jewellery and that the hair in your desired treatment area is trimmed or saved. The skin should be free from any residue of skincare products, makeup, powders, antiperspirants or deodorants. In between treatments, you’re allowed to shave, but not wax or pluck the hair.

Refrain from using flammable liquids like alcohol or acetone to cleanse the skin for an hour before use, as it could cause skin burns.

How to Use Sensica Sensilight Pro?

Once your skin is prepped as instructed above, follow the steps bellow:

Step 1 – Turn on the device and choose an energy level manually or use the energy recommendation setting.

Step 2 – Place the Sensilight Pro treatment window on the intended treatment area, make sure it’s in full contact with the skin.

Step 3 – Press the trigger button to release a single light pulse. Slowly move the device from one spot to another following each pulse.

Step 4 – You can either release the pulses manually or opt for the glide mode. To use the glide mode, begin the treatment in the standard pulse mode. After 3 consecutive pulses without releasing the trigger button, the device will automatically go into glide mode, releasing continuous pulses every 1-3 seconds, provided there’s proper contact with the skin and the skin tone is suitable for IPL usage. The glide mode will automatically disable when the device isn’t in full contact with the skin.

Step 5 – Finish the treatment and turn off the device.

During the hair removal treatment, try not to overlap pulses, because repeated overlapping could lead to burning through overexposure. Besides, avoid treating the same area of skin more than once per treatment otherwise it could cause irritation.

For body hair, the first 1-4 hair removal treatments should be about 2 weeks apart. The next 5-7 hair removal treatments should be 4 weeks apart.

For facial hair, the first 1-5 hair removal treatments should be around 2 weeks apart. The next 6-8 hair removal treatments should be 4 weeks apart. Continue the treatments for about 8 times until you achieve your desired results

Sensica Sensilight Pro IPL Review – Do I Recommend this Device?

Yes, I definitely do recommend it! Despite its huge size, the Sensica Sensilight Pro is actually smaller than many IPL devices on the market. However, it’s ot quite as efficient as others, but the glide mode is one handy addition to ensure a smooth and seamless hair removal process. I am particularly fond of its cordless design, as it allows you to reach areas like the back of your legs with ease, a convenience you can’t find with corded machines.

Overall, I deem this a reasonably priced IPL hair removal device that does what it claims to and is entirely painless, so if you’re looking to treat both body and facial hair, it’s a worthwhile investment.
