Your Complete Paraffin Wax Bath Instructions – Wax Therapy Done Right

A paraffin wax bath is a machine that heats and holds paraffin wax—a type of wax used to make candles. The wax is intended to offer therapeutic benefits such as relieving arthritis pain, sore joints and aching muscles by completely covering the affected area. Besides for home use, wax therapy is also often used in rehabilitation and medical programs. On top of pain-relief, you can also rely on paraffin baths to achieve smoother, moisturized skin should you have dry, flaky skin. Knowing how to maximise the use of your paraffin bath will offer you the best results without experiencing any injury.

However, this unit should not be used if you have open wounds or cuts, problems with sensation, or if you only want to warm your hands.

To learn how to use a paraffin wax bath correctly, follow these instructions to set yourself for success.

How to Use a Paraffin Wax Bath At Home?

You can choose to get a paraffin wax treatment done at a salon or spa, or even at home. If you opt for the latter, it is imperative to follow the correct procedure to yield the maximum benefits from the treatment.

To do an at-home paraffin wax bath treatment, you will need the following supplies:

  • Four to six pounds of food-grade paraffin wax
  • Double boiler
  • Measuring cup
  • Mineral oil
  • Greased plastic container
  • Thermometer
  • Olive oil
  • Sealable plastic bag
  • Towel or over mitt
  • Timmer
  • Tissue
  • Moisturizer

Alternatively, we recommend getting a portable paraffin wax bath that is designed for at-home treatments. These devices often come complete as a kit thus reducing the number of supplies you need, and many of them come with paraffin wax beads.

If you are using an at-home paraffin wax bath, always follow the instructions provided by your machine manufacturer.

Step 1 – Melt the Wax

Place about 3 pounds of wax into your paraffin wax pot and set the temperature to high. Depending on whether your machine comes with a timer, keep track of the temperature. Paraffin wax typically requires one to two hours to melt so in the meantime, you may prep your treatment area for the wax (hands, elbows, or feet). Wash your skin with soap and dry with a lint-free towel. You may go in with a rich lotion to enhance the moisturizing effect.

Step 2 – Apply the Wax

Once your paraffin wax bath’s indicator light turns green, you can start applying the wax. Dip your treatment area into the wax and leave it in for a few seconds until a layer forms over the area. Wait for the wax to dry—you will know it is dry when the once glowing wax becomes dull. Once dry, put your treated area back into the wax, but this time go in a little deeper than you did before. This prevents the warm wax from getting under the previous wax layers thus burning. Then, repeat this process about six to eight times.

Step 3 – Wrap Your Treated Area with Plastic Bag

Once you have a minimum of six to eight layers of wax on your area of treatment, wrap a large plastic bag over it. Then place a damp cloth on top and let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes. This will create moisture, deep heat for your treated area.

Step 4 – Remove the Wax

After waiting for 15 to 20 minutes, remove your area of treatment from the towel and the plastic bag. Use soft tissue to remove the wax residue from your skin. Avoid using cotton pads as they tend to break apart on sticky surfaces. Finally, go in with a rich moisturizer all over the treated area.

When you have completed your treatment, read our step-by-step guide on how to clean paraffin wax machine the right way so you can extend its lifespan.

Whenever the wax of your unit lessens, feel free to purchase additional blocks of paraffin, usually from the brand of your paraffin wax bath machine or any local beauty supply store.

Dos & Don’ts When Applying Paraffin Wax

We recommend removing any clothing near your treated area to prevent wax stains.

With that being said, refrain from applying paraffin to skin that has cuts or open wounds, is inflamed or irritated, or has trouble with sensitivity.

Either way, we highly advise you to consult with your physician on whether paraffin wax therapy is the right path for you.

Conclusion

Individuals make use of paraffin wax for various motives, including as a skin moisturizer and heat treatment for arthritis, muscle spasms, aches, and so on. It helps alleviate dry, flaky skin, as well as relieve swollen joints and painful muscles. You can either purchase a paraffin wax bath kit that is designed for home use or get the treatment done at a salon by a professional esthetician. If you opt for the former, be sure to follow safety guidelines and steer clear of the treatment should you have open sores, cuts, or any chemical sensitivities.
