GLO Science GLO Brilliant White Smile At-Home Teeth Whitening Device

Although in-office visits can ensure a perfectly seamless teeth whitening experience, it’s not always convenient to schedule an appointment with your dentist. When a professional appointment is out of reach or isn’t in the card, there are ample effective at-home options from reputable brands that are worth trying out, one of them being the best water flossers.

While achieving a brighter smile seems daunting at first, the best teeth whitening products streamline the process.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Most teeth whitening products include active ingredients to rid your teeth of stains. Stains can form on the interior and exterior of your teeth—those inside the teeth can result from aging or genetic disorders while exterior surface stains are typically associated with tobacco use and the consumption of pigmented food and drinks.

Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are most commonly used in teeth whitening treatments. These ingredients are able to penetrate tooth enamel and reduce discoloration without softening or thinning teeth.

Is At-Home Teeth Whitening Safe?

Teeth whitening is considered safe overall. However, it’s important to talk to your dentist before starting a treatment at home to make sure it’s a suitable path for you, especially if you’ve experienced tooth or gum sensitivity in the past. If you can’t handle a higher concentration of whitening agents, your dentist can help you find a product that works best.

When whitening your teeth at home, pay attention to how you feel. If at any point you notice sensitivity on your teeth or gums while using these products, stop using them immediately and contact your dentist.

One way to ensure you’re doing the treatment correctly is to follow the product’s directions. If it says 15 minutes, any period longer than that isn’t better. It will only drastically increase your tooth sensitivity, making it hard to handle cold foods like ice cream or even iced water.

To find the crème de la crème, we took the initiative to test 8 products, following manufacturers’ instructions and evaluating the convenience, comfort, effectiveness, and overall value.

Here are 8 best teeth whitening products dentists and beauty gurus alike are raving about!

What to Look for in Teeth Whitening Kits

A. Product Type

  • Trays

A tray is filled with whitening gel and placed in the user’s mouth for a specific amount of time each day before being removed.

  • Light kits

These kits come with an LED or UV activator light. With them, you’ll typically brush on the whitening gel, then insert a lighted tray into your mount and sit tight for a short period of time before switching off the skit and removing the tray.

  • Gels

Teeth whitening gels are applied, usually with a small brush, to your teeth in order to buff away stains using a peroxide-based ingredient. Gels are often used alongside trays, but some can be applied and left on for a period of time, and finally, rinsed off.

  • Pens

Whitening pens allow for easier and more precise whitening on-the-spot, hence helpful for minor staining.

  • Strips

Similar to how trays work, whitening strips are infused with gel and are then placed on your teeth. They don’t always stay in place as well as trays, but you’re allowed to talk and are more comfortable.

B. Ingredients

Some of the common teeth whitening ingredients that work wonders in a home setting include carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. In the case of the former, look for one with around 35%; for the latter, you’ll want something with a 10 to 15% concentration. Both of these ingredients tend to cause less sensitivity and side effects than the others, such as sodium hydroxide and alcohol. You’ll experience very minimal “zings” that feel almost like mini electrical shocks in your mouth.

Say your teeth and gums are particularly sensitive, we recommend opting for a product with 3 to 10% carbamide peroxide.

Having said that, if you come across PAP (phtalimido-peroxy-caproic acid) on the ingredient label, steer clear! It’s not recommended for whitening works at all due to reports of lingering sensitivity.

C. Length of Application

Since all types of whitening products are applied differently and carry varying concentrations of ingredients, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions when applying the product.

In general, strips are safe to use twice a day for up to two weeks, for a maximum of 30 minutes at a time. Depending on the ingredient percentage, gels can be used for one to two hours per day for two weeks, too.

Pens leave much less product onto your teeth so you can use them frequently, but you should still aim for one to two applications per day, and for one or two weeks at a time. Trays are recommended for up to 30 minutes of use, and light kits are usually left in place for shorter periods of time, often less than 10 minutes.

It’s best not to develop a routine of using these products on a regular basis otherwise they can lead to severe dental problems later in life. As the saying goes “moderation is key”.

D. Price

The average cost of teeth whitening kits ranges from $50 to $200, and that price variations will mostly come down to ingredient concentration and the technology involved.
